Signs & Symptoms of Gynecological Cancer
There are no screening tests for gynecological cancers other than cervical cancer, so it is important for women to be educated on the signs and symptoms — and to act on them. While many signs of gynecological cancer could also be signs of other ailments, it is important to see your healthcare provider for evaluation if any of these symptoms persist:- Vaginal bleeding after menopause
- Excessively heavy menstrual cycles
- Abnormal bleeding between periods
- Unexplained pelvic or abdominal pain, bloating or nausea
- Discharge or pain with intercourse
- Severe change in bowel or bladder habits
- A heavy feeling in the pelvis
- A sore or lump in your vulva
- Weight gain after menopause

Personalized, Evidence-Based Treatments

Our gynecologic oncologists meet with genetic specialists, pathologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and other specialists in a tumor conference focused on cancer of the female reproductive system. The goal is to provide each patient with the most accurate staging and individualized care plan by a team of experts, which may include:- Minimally-invasive surgery (robotic or laparoscopic)
- Laparotomy (open surgery) for surgical staging or debulking and complex surgery
- Fertility-sparing surgery
- Surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC), which combines chemotherapy and surgery
- Systemic therapies, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy
- Clinical trials available through the Wellstar Research Institute, affiliated with Mayo Clinic and NRG Oncology
- Genetic testing and genetic counseling
- Radiation therapy, such as high-dose rate vaginal brachytherapy, 3D conformal radiation therapy paired with external beam radiation (EBRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
