Thoracic Aortic Surgery
Wellstar’s aortic disease experts offer thoracic aortic surgery to treat aneurysms in the thoracic aorta.
Leading-Edge Aortic Care
Our cardiovascular surgeons and heart care team members are here to help people with thoracic aortic aneurysms understand their options and receive the proper treatment, which may include thoracic aortic surgery.
An aneurysm occurs when an area of the aorta weakens and then abnormally widens as blood is pumped through it. Thoracic aortic aneurysms are caused by atherosclerosis — or hardened arteries — as well as hypertension, genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome, certain connective tissue disorders, or an irregular aortic valve, among other causes.
If not monitored or treated early, an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm can cause a rupture or tear, also known as dissection. In this case, emergency open-chest thoracic aortic surgery is required for treatment.

How thoracic aortic surgery is performed
We offer complex ascending thoracic aortic surgery to treat aneurysms in the chest region of the aorta, the body’s main artery.- Thoracic aortic surgery. This complex open procedure is performed by a cardiac surgeon and involves removing the damaged section of the aorta and replacing it with a synthetic tube. Sometimes, the aneurysm also affects the parts of the aorta that connect to the heart — the aortic root or aortic valve. Aortic root and possibly aortic valve replacement surgery may also be needed if this happens.
- Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). Depending on a person’s unique medical factors, this less invasive option may be available. The cardiac surgeon makes a tiny incision in the groin and threads a tube or catheter into the aorta. Next, the surgeon delivers and expands a metal mesh graft to the area of the aneurysm.
Cardiac rehabilitation after surgery
To assist in regaining your strength after surgery, your cardiac surgeon may recommend Cardiac Rehab at one of Wellstar’s many outpatient locations. The Cardiac Rehab team can work with you to develop an exercise regimen, monitor you during your exercise sessions and provide support and education to help you live a healthier life.Learn more about Wellstar’s Comprehensive Aortic Program.
