Patients receiving certain chemotherapy medications and radiation may be at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The Cardio-Oncology Program at Wellstar Georgia Cancer Center makes sure your cancer treatments can continue while carefully protecting the health of your heart.

Our Cardio-Oncology Program was one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. Patients can expect:

• Expertise: We have a board-certified cardio-oncologist who is a leader in the field and the first designated fellow of the International Cardio-Oncology Society in Georgia.
• Collaboration: Specially trained cardiologists work with oncologists and hematologists to preserve the heart health of patients who are receiving cancer treatment.
• Convenient appointments: Our cardio-oncologists see patients at Wellstar Georgia Cancer Center. This allows you to receive all your care in one location rather than having to make an extra trip to the cardiovascular clinic.
• Advanced imaging for early intervention: Wellstar Georgia Cancer Center uses electrocardiogram techniques and advanced cardiac imaging to monitor heart function throughout your cancer treatment. This equipment can detect heart muscle strain at a very early stage, allowing us to intervene as soon as there's an issue.

What to expect

Taking steps to care for your heart during cancer treatment is important for preventing future risk of heart disease. Our program is in place to detect, monitor and prevent any damage from occurring while you are undergoing treatment. We also care for patients with pre-existing heart problems who are going through cancer treatment.
