Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a biventricular pacemaker treatment that aims to restore the heart rhythm in people with heart failure. The goal of CRT is to improve your heart function, ability to exercise and overall quality of life.
Biventricular Pacemaker Reduces Heart Failure Symptoms
An electrophysiologist places the pacemaker under the skin in a minor surgical procedure. The device’s wires connect to the ventricles on each side of the heart, sending electrical signals that cause them to pump together as they should. When the ventricles pump in synch, it helps avoid fluid buildup in the lungs and legs.
Is CRT right for you?
Your electrophysiologist may suggest CRT if:- The ventricles of your heart do not pump in synch.
- You have mild to moderate heart failure.
- Your heart is weak and enlarged.
- Your heart failure symptoms are not controlled with lifestyle changes and other treatments.
CRT is not typically effective in people with advanced heart failure.
CRT paired with implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
People with specific conditions or levels of risk can benefit from pairing CRT with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). An ICD detects and fixes fast or irregular heartbeats that can lead to life-threatening cardiac arrest with an electric shock when needed.Learn more about Wellstar heart rhythm care and find an electrophysiologist near you.
