Wellstar physicians use echocardiograms to check for heart valve or heart chamber problems or to discover if symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath are caused by heart issues. The type of echocardiogram you have depends on the information needed. A common type of echocardiogram is the transthoracic, meaning across or through the chest wall. To perform this test, a technician spreads gel on a device called a transducer, then presses it against your skin, aiming an ultrasound beam through your chest to your heart. The transducer records the sound wave echoes from your heart and a computer converts the echoes into moving images on a monitor.
