Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery
The orthopedic surgery program at Wellstar Children’s is dedicated to treating musculoskeletal trauma, spine problems, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors and congenital diseases in children. Our multidisciplinary surgical team includes skilled pediatric orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists and certified nurses who perform surgery in operating rooms designated for children. We create individualized treatment plans because every child’s skeletal maturity is unique.Surgical procedures
Our pediatric orthopedic surgeons are trained to perform surgeries on children, including:- Traditional surgery: For complex or complicated procedures where it’s important for a surgeon to see the extent of the injury they are repairing
- Pediatric minimally invasive surgery: Performed using arthroscopic techniques, which involve smaller incisions and lead to less scarring and pain
- Cancer surgery: When patients have musculoskeletal tumors, we offer the area’s only pediatric orthopedic oncologist who specializes in surgical care of children with both malignant and benign tumors. We provide an entire team of cancer experts, as well as cancer research and clinical trials.
Child Life Specialists are available to talk to your child, explain their condition and help them understand and cope with their treatment and care.
Pediatric Rehabilitation
Following orthopedic surgery, patients receive support care from specially trained therapists in our dedicated pediatric rehabilitation center. Your child’s post-surgical care may include:- Pediatric sports medicine specialists: Assess and treat sports-related injuries to return the athlete safely to their sport
- Pediatric physical therapists: Focus on rehabilitation to improve balance, fitness, motor skills and strength in children with disabilities, disorders or injuries
- Pediatric occupational therapists: Help children to regain, develop and maintain skills they need to live a more functionally independent lifestyle
Pediatric Sports Medicine
Wellstar, affiliated with Medical College of Georgia, has an established outreach program that provides certified athletic trainers to meet the needs of recreational, scholastic and collegiate athletes throughout the CSRA. Services include daily coverage of practice and home events, as well as special events in the community.Our certified athletic trainers perform injury evaluations, rehabilitation and injury prevention. They also develop and maintain the overall physical fitness of athletes, assisting them in achieving a level of fitness necessary to compete successfully.
