Focus On Breast MRI

An annual mammogram is the most widely used tool for breast health and proven to save lives through early detection of breast cancer.

Some women also undergo Breast MRI for a more detailed picture of the breast. Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical tool that uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the female breast. Breast MRI does not replace conventional imaging of the breasts, such as mammography or ultrasound, but provides an additional detection tool, particularly for women who have:

  • A history of breast cancer or currently have the disease
  • A strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • Carrier of BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes
  • Dense breasts
  • Inconclusive mammography or ultrasound examinations
  • Lifetime risk of at least 20-25% for breast cancer based on family history and other factors

The newest in Breast MRI technology has been installed at the Kennestone Outpatient Pavilion in the Kennestone Women’s Imaging Center. Made by Phillips, the Ingenia 3.0T provides unparalleled, high resolution images for the radiologist to review and the ability to diagnose small lesions.

The Ingenia 3.0T optimizes patient comfort through the enlarged opening or “bore”. This wide bore allows some patients to avoid feelings of claustrophobia ensuring a more pleasant experience.

Having this technological advancement provides our community with a new and effective tool in the diagnosis of breast cancer, and WellStar is pleased to be the first non-academic installation in the country.

Our imaging team is comprised of board certified subspecialized Radiologists, Technologists, Sonographers, Nursing and support personnel who exemplify Wellstar’s commitment to the highest quality standards and vision of providing world class heathcare to our patients and the community we serve.
