What is the Mayo Clinic Care Network?

The Mayo Clinic Care Network is a select group of independent health systems carefully vetted by Mayo Clinic and granted special access to Mayo’s knowledge, expertise and resources. Wellstar doctors can quickly access Mayo’s latest research, diagnostic and treatment resources whenever they feel it will benefit their patients. Additionally, collaboration with Mayo Clinic will help Wellstar achieve its goal to improve the delivery of health care.

Why did Mayo Clinic choose Wellstar for membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network?

Does this mean I'll automatically be referred to Mayo Clinic for more complex care?

Your doctor has access to Mayo’s research, diagnostic and treatment resources so they can provide more of your care locally, reducing your need to travel outside the region for care. There is no obligation for your doctor to refer patients to Mayo Clinic.

Does this mean that Wellstar could be purchased by Mayo Clinic?

This agreement is not an acquisition or merger. Mayo Clinic Care Network members like Wellstar remain independent, community-owned health care providers.

Will Mayo Clinic be contacting me if my doctor uses Mayo's resources?

No. The interaction is between medical professionals of Wellstar and Mayo Clinic. Mayo does not see or contact you through these services. The consultation will simply be noted in your secure medical record.

Can I request a consult or second opinion with Mayo Clinic?

Typically Wellstar doctors will request a consult with Mayo Clinic if it will benefit a patient’s care. If you are experiencing anxiety about your condition and would like a second opinion, please talk to your doctor about requesting one. It can be done easily—at no additional cost—and without travel to another location. Your doctor can then discuss the best treatment plan with you.
